US AI Academy

About US AI Academy

A school for how AI really works.

US AI Academy is an independent online academy, founded by Jazon Samillano, an American AI engineer. The courses open AI up: you follow a real model one step at a time, with real numbers you can change yourself.

Every number is real; every lesson is hands-on.

How the courses are made

Four rules you can check

Every lesson follows the same four rules. Each one comes with a place in Course 1 where you can see it for yourself.

RULE 01

Every number is real

The examples come from real runs of real AI models, never made-up values, and they’re checked before they go in a lesson.

See it in Course 1

Qwen3-0.6B-Base, a small open AI model from 2025, reads “The Eiffel Tower is in the city of” as 10 pieces of text and guesses Paris with a chance of 63.3%. The course works that number out step by step.

RULE 02

Hands on, not just reading

Most lessons have labs: drag a line, turn a dial, change a number, and watch the math respond right away.

See it in Course 1

The first lesson, The puzzle, hands you a straight line to drag. Your job: both cats on one side, both dogs on the other. Spoiler: you can’t, and the lesson proves why.

RULE 03

Plain words first

Every term is explained where it first appears, so you never have to read a sentence twice. No math degree needed: if you can multiply and add, you can follow every step.

See it in Course 1

Every symbol in the course, said out loud in plain words, on one page. The only gear you need is a scientific calculator, and the one on your phone will do.

RULE 04

Honest about what’s unknown

Some things about AI are settled, and some are still being argued about. The courses tell you which is which, instead of smoothing over the gaps.

See it in Course 1

I trained the same tiny network (three artificial neurons) on the cats-and-dogs puzzle 1,000 times, each time starting from different random numbers. 272 runs got stuck without solving it. The lesson What the math can’t explain yet digs into why that matters.

Who it’s for

Curious people, future AI workers, and skeptics

Curious about AI

You use AI and want to know what’s going on inside it, explained in plain words, without a math degree.

Heading into AI work

You want to work in AI, or next to it, and you want the basics to actually make sense, not just sound familiar.

Engineers who check

You’d rather redo the math than take anyone’s word for it. Every number comes from a real run, so you can.

Your path

From the first lesson to your certificate

  1. Step 1 · Free

    Start with the free chapter

The first 4 lessons of The Math Behind AI, open to everyone, no sign-up. Start the first lesson.

  2. Step 2

    Finish the full course

The rest of The Math Behind AI: the remaining lessons and their labs, the cats-and-dogs puzzle solved, 28 exercises with worked answers, a 50-page PDF guide, and an AI tutor that answers from the course itself. See every lesson.

  3. Step 3

    Earn your certificate

Pass the final exam and earn the US AI Academy AI Foundations Certificate for The Math Behind AI. It comes with its own page anyone can check, ready to add to LinkedIn.

Start with the puzzle

Two cats, two dogs, one straight line, and a proof that it can’t be done. It’s the first free lesson, and there’s nothing to sign up for.
